Fyrr í mánaðinum var MFS á Nordisk Ordførande Møte í Stokkholm. Á fundinum varð viðgjørt, at lestrarfelagsskapir sjáldan verða hoyrdir í nóg góðari tíð, tá mál, ið viðkoma lesandi, eru uppi at venda í Norðurlendska Ráðharraráðnum.

Lestrarfelagsskapir og mentamálaráðharrar eiga at hava sama ynski - eitt gott lestrarumhvørvi á altjóða góðkendum støði. Lesandi duga best at umboða lesandi.

Higher Ambitions
For the Students of Tomorrow

The Nordiskt Ordförande Møte (NOM) is a cooperating network and
consultative meeting of the National Unions of Students of the Nordic
and Baltic national umbrella organisations for students in higher
education. It all started in 1946 when a Nordic Student Meeting was
held in Aarhus, Denmark. Today, NOM operates both as a regional
cooperation platform and a network. As the clear representatives for
students in the countries within the Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM),
we demand to be included in the discussion.

We, the Nordic and Baltic national unions of students, call for:
 • Strong and independent student influence.
 • High quality education, regardless of which of the Nordic or
 Baltic nations you study in.
 • Genuine access to higher education for all parts of society.
 • Heightened and joint ambitions for public investments in higher
education to the benefit of students.
 • Social security systems beyond national borders.

The chairing of the NCM by Sweden has seemingly opened the door
towards a more structured and open dialogue with stakeholders. Since
students are directly affected by the decisions made by the NCM, their voices need to be heard. The inclusion of students on all levels
strengthens democracy. Therefore, we want independent student
influence to be ensured at all levels of higher education - a right that
should be governed by law. At all times when decisions affecting
students are underway, this principle should apply. A governmental
network such as the Nordic Council of Ministers is no exception.

For students, high quality education is more than a need it is an
absolute requirement. We therefore call for heightened and joint
ambitions when investing in higher education. Such investments must
always be to the benefit of students. Quality assurance needs to be up to standard in all countries, and the institutions need investment to ensure that they are able to live up to such standards.

We want higher education to be free, equal and open to everyone.
Education needs to be accessible for all parts of society, regardless of
nationality, age and background. This means mapping the current
situation, identifying existing barriers for equal participation and amend and handle them. Higher education should not be a mechanism to maintain socio-economic differences, but an enabler for every willing individual to reach their full potential. It is important; not just for the individual, but also for the whole of society that higher education is
inclusive and adjusted to the varying needs of students. Therefore, joint, ambitious efforts and investments to the benefit of students, directly translate into benefit for society overall.

National borders should not limit the support given to students. For
more students to take up the opportunity to study abroad, they need to be sure that they will have adequate support and security. Financial and social security is crucial for ensuring that everyone has an equal
opportunity to pursue higher education. Therefore, state financed
support systems need to act as enablers to higher education, but should also do so beyond national borders.
